This piece was written for the memory of mentor and friend, Allan Schindler. The first installment was written for a memorial concert for Allan hosted by the Eastman Audio Research Studio (formerly ECMC). Further installments/movements are in progress.
I am always intrigued by the ability of Allan' music to be so many things at once. Restless, but also patient. Intensely serious, but also lithe and humorous. This could just as easily describe Allan himself. But in addition to all these things, Allan was immensely generous, and I am so very grateful for the doors he opened for me, and for his calming, nurturing guidance that ushered me into professional life. These short pieces, “ciphers" (from a poem Allan set), are my attempt at an hommage. ECMC veterans may recognize some of the sounds from Allan's personal sound file library.
