Windsor McCay illustrated the surrealist comic strip “Little Nemo in Slumberland” between 1905 and 1913. The comic offers an incredibly imaginative series of excursions into the dreams of a six-year-old boy.
These eight piano miniatures draw inspiration from the wonderful strangeness and concision of McCay's illustrations. With these pieces, I do not attempt to tell little Nemo’s stories. Rather, each miniature is like a frame in a comic—a moment, frozen in time, that may point to something larger than itself, while still only one image.
The work is dedicated to Ryan MacEvoy McCullough, who premiered the work at the Four Seasons Centre Piano Virtuoso Series in Toronto, Canada.
